Cheddar Festival Champions

The boys from Wellington RFC Under 11's sponsored by Notaro Care Homes have done it again. On Sunday 1st May 2011, at the end of a wonderful season, they regained the Cheddar Festival Trophy defeating Taunton, last year's champions, in the final. The standard of entries in this year's competition was better than ever with teams from as far afield as Dudley and the rugby hotbeds of Bridgend from South Wales and Redruth representing Cornwall.

Our boys started slowly conceding an early try against Old Bristolians. Fortunately in the second half they scored two stunning tries and were off to a winning start. The next game saw the boys play the best rugby of the day beating Dudley 25 -0 with all the tries coming in a breath taking first half. Nailsea and Blackwell were beaten 10 - 0 final pool game ensuring a place in the final.

The final always provides a nervous but thrilling time for all involved. When Wellington and Taunton get together the game never ceases to be spirited, sporting and of a very high standard. Wellington proved to be the stronger side on the day with a fabulous display by their forwards and wonderful skills and fearless defence demonstrated by the back line. At the final whistle Wellington had won 10 - 0 and cheered the opposition off the pitch to start the celebrations of the now three time winners of Cheddar Festival. The boys scored 12 tries without conceding any since the first half of the first game.

Other Wellington age groups also put in strong performances. The under 9's won the plate competition; the under 10's lost in the final, and the U12's lost in their final. The under 7's and under 8's both played wonderfully well in the tag competitions and had a huge amount of fun!
